Lisa, thanks so much for your comment. You make such a good point here--one that my post did not explore in the "working moms" category. You're so right: after making the choice to have children, there are so many moms who do not have the financial circumstances that permit them to choose full-time motherhood. For the most part, staying at home remains a privilege or, in some cases, a huge sacrifice that has an effect on families. I think where Rosen's case falls apart is her assertion that Ann Romney can't be an effective advocate for women BECAUSE she was a privileged, stay-at-home Mom. Personally, I don't think that makes her unclear or unsympathetic to the needs of families. She can still be an advocate, although one is never more ardent than when they are personally affected by a cause. On the other hand, most mothers working outside the home are so busy trying to hold everything together that they do not have much time to be engaged in civic dialogues like these.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Melanie. I know so many wonderful moms like you who work themselves to exhaustion. It just seems like a terrible injustice to say that Ann Romney couldn't be an effective advocate for women because of her status as a well-off, full-time mother.

What an excellent article. A friend recommended your post, and I am so glad to have found it. I remember when I was a teenager a distant relative asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I said a stay a home wife and mother. He responded with disappointment, "Is that all?" It's so sad that how little a woman's role as a woman is valued - in whatever role she takes. It seems to me sometimes that the only time a woman is appreciated by our feminist driven society is when she acts like a man. How sad is that? To claim to be valuing women, but in fact to not value them unless they shed their woman-like qualities. I appreciate your post so much. I am a stay at home mother, but also run a small from-home business. I often need to remind myself that the approval I am seeking is God's, not society's. Thank you for your encouragement.

I've been wishing to sit down and WRITE out my thoughts ever since that poor woman shared her foolish thoughts. Thank you for doing it, and for doing it better than I could have. I love and respect you, dear friend, and you have handled every stage of life with a beauty and class that only you could manage. You're wonderful.
